When Does an English Word End in a V?

The answer? Never! English words do not end in V. There will always be an E after the V. If you can hear the “v” sound at the end of an English word, it’s a safe bet to put the letter E after it.

The saying we can use with a student is: “No English words end in V, it will always be followed by an E.”

  1. Rev, as in to “rev your engine”.
Yes, rev can be an abbreviation for revolution, but one does not “revolution their engine”. Nor is it a slang word, it is recognized by Cambridge, Oxford, even Scrabble as a proper word.
